Nine Below Zero at The Bullingdon
This week I have been working on photos of one of my all time favourite live acts and one of the first bands I ever took photos of. In fact, the first proper gig I ever went to was Nine Below Zero playing at The Hammersmith Odeon in 1981.
On Friday they played at The Bullingdon, Oxford. I have waited for many years to have the opportunity to photograph them again, knowing what I know now. In the old days, with my film camera, fast film wasn’t available so I had to ‘push’ 400 ASA film to 1600 and process it myself accordingly. Thank god for modern technology, I can finally take the photos I could only dream of back then.
Since their formation in 1977 NBZ have developed a reputation as one of the best blues bands in the country. Their high energy live act was already well established by the time they signed to A&M RECORDS in 1980 and was forever captured on their classic live album 1980’s LIVE AT THE MARQUEE. Legendary producer GLYN JOHNS subsequently worked with the band on 1981’s DON’T POINT YOUR FINGER and they became a familiar sight on seminal TV shows like THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST, THE SOUTH BANK SHOW and memorably performed ‘’11+11’’ on the very first episode of anarchic comedy hit THE YOUNG ONES.
Here are some of the photos. More can be found on my Facebook Page : –
